This course is designed for law enforcement investigators tasked with handling child abuse and child sexual assault cases. While the primary focus is on child sexual abuse, the investigative strategies taught are also applicable to cases involving physical abuse. Participants will explore current child abuse statistics and common misconceptions, conduct a detailed review of relevant North Carolina General Statutes, particularly those related to sexual abuse and exploitation, and gain practical guidance on managing cases from initial report through prosecution. Key topics include evidence collection, corroboration strategies, child forensic interviews, interpreting medical findings (or absence thereof), handling delayed disclosures and recantations, engaging with multi-disciplinary teams, and conducting suspect interviews. The course incorporates case studies and scenario-based exercises to reinforce learning and application of investigative techniques.
