Event Description
Johnston Community College Fire Programs is excited to announce Fire Academy Class 14, a daytime academy beginning August 3, 2026 and graduating December 16, 2026.
This academy runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, preparing students through hands-on training, classroom instruction, and physical fitness to qualify for entry-level positions in the fire service.

Prerequisites / Requirements:
Must be 18 years old (students who are 17 may be considered on a case-by-case basis)
High School Diploma / GED

- Do I have to be on a Fire Department to attend the Fire Academy?
No! There are several options for students, contact the Academy Coordinator for more details.
- Do I need prior fire service experience?
No prior experience is required. This academy is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the fire service.
- Can I apply if I am 17 years old?
Yes. Applicants who are 17 may be considered on a case-by-case basis. However, per OSFM regulations, students must be 18 years old prior to participating in any live fire training, which is a required component of the academy.
- Do I need my own firefighting gear?
Yes. Students are required to have structural firefighting gear, SCBA, facepiece, and a spare cylinder. Unaffiliated students have options available—contact the Academy Coordinator for details.
- Does the academy include physical training?
Yes. Cadets participate in daily, structured physical training each morning. Workouts are designed around job-specific strength and endurance, including functional movements and fireground-related tasks to prepare you for the physical demands of the fire service.
- What is the time commitment for the Academy?
The academy runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This is a full-time commitment, and attendance is critical to successfully complete the program.
- Are there uniform and conduct requirements?
Yes. All cadets are required to follow established uniform standards as well as academy rules and regulations. These expectations are in place to maintain professionalism, accountability, and a structured learning environment. All the documents will be provided once accepted.
